Making an analogy between scientific papers and music scores, we associate the citation intentions with six pitches from low to high: “E4” for “Background,” “G4” for “Compare or Contrast,” “B4” for “motivation,” “D5” for “use,” “F5” for “extend,” and finally, “A5” for “future work.” Each score (black dot) represents a reference.
